Excessive weight is one of the most common problems in our modern society. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of Americans suffer from obesity. The problem is not only about unattractive appearance and difficulties, when buying the clothes. In fact, obesity leads to numerous health problems like heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes and even cancer.

Nowadays we have a wide variety of diet programs, special exercises and supplements to get rid of excessive kilos. The common rule is: spend more calories, than you take in.

You probably know that almost all processes in your body (including metabolism) are regulated by the work of special chemicals called hormones. If something goes wrong in your hormonal balance, it may impair your metabolism and lower effectiveness of the weight loss programs.

Let’s see how hormones can influence on your weight, and what you can do to turn off their weight-gain effects.

#1. Insulin

This hormone is produced by your pancreas in order to convert sugar from foods into energy and to store fats in the body.

It was found that excessive consumption of carbs can eventually cause insulin resistance. It means that body’s cells can’t perceive insulin as needed. Consequently, your pancreas begins to produce more and more insulin in order to compensate this problem.

Hyperproduction of insulin usually leads to obesity and metabolic syndrome.

How can you prevent this disorder? Try to reduce sugars and refined carbs in your menu. Eat more protein and omega-3 fats, exercise regularly and drink plenty of water to improve insulin levels.

#2. Cortisol

Many of us experience food cravings, when have emotional stresses. The reason is that in these situations your adrenal glands tend to produce more of stress hormone cortisol.

Chronic stress holds elevated cortisol levels for extended period of time, causing increased appetite and irresistable want to eat sweets.

Learn to cope with stress in healthy way. Choose physical activity that could be efficient to reduce your bad mood. Meditation, yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, Tai Chi and other relaxation techniques can help you to overcome stress.

#3. Leptin

So called “satiety hormone” is synthesized by your adipocytes (fat cells). Its main function is to improve your sense of fullness.

Leptin says to the brain that your body has enough energy in storage, so it’s time to put off you spoon.

Unfortunately this mechanism doesn’t work properly in obese people, as they commonly have leptin resistance. That’s why the brain can’t catch the right time to stop eating.

This problem is associated with hyperinsulinemia and inflammatory process in hypothalamus.

You can enhance leptin sensitivity by eating anti-inflammatory foods like oily fish, berries, avocado, grapes etc.

Avoid chips, hamburgers, cookies and other sources of trans fats, because they may aggravate inflammation.

Specialists say that restful sleep and regular exercises are able to normalize leptin sensitivity and improve your slimness.
